A news update is a timely, informative account of a significant event or development. It is generally written in first or third person and should be kept short for speed and clarity. If a writer wants to refer to a person by name, the full first and last initials should be used for consistency. Avoid switching to first and second person for this same reason, unless there is compelling reasons to do so.
The most newsworthy information should be at the top of your article, following the “inverted pyramid” structure that puts the most important details in a clear lead. You can then follow with other details, quotes and context. If you want to include more background, try to tie it to an event that’s currently dominating the news, such as a celebrity death or a political scandal.
