Live news is various types of media broadcasting in real time as events occur, as opposed to pre-recorded television programs. It includes world news programs, local TV newscasts and other live streaming news services.
Typically, these live video streams are available as unmetered content through Smart TV, the networks’ websites, subscription video on demand websites such as Hulu, digital media players that support streaming television such as Roku and mobile apps. The ABC network in Australia offers its news program as a stream on the internet at its website and on YouTube, while CNN and Al Jazeera also provide livestreams on their websites and channels on YouTube.
FOX 5 New York offers a national news service called LiveNOW from Fox, which is available on Roku, Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV. It originally launched in 2014 as a webcast of local KSAZ-TV’s newscast, and gained popularity during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 when it rebranded to CoronavirusNow.
Live news is the opposite of live entertainment, which features performers on stage and may involve costume changes or improvisations. Instead, live news is often a solemn, empathetic report on the unfolding of a tragic event or other topic of concern. It is often accompanied by photos and interviews with people directly affected by the event.
